Mike Love of the Beach Boys Has Covered The Ramones 'Rockaway Beach'

OK ... chalking this up to ... not sure what to think of ...

Mike Love - of the iconic pop band - The Beach Boys has released a cover of the song "Rockaway Beach" by the iconic Pop Punk band The Ramones.

According to Mike Love:

“It felt so natural to sing it.  It fits beautifully in the Beach Boys surfing song genre. Not only is it a great song, it’s also right in my vocal range. It’s almost as if it was designed for me to sing, and that’s why I am so eager to play it live.”

Now hearing that - you would think Joey Ramone would be spinning in his grave ...

But apparently it has  Marky Ramone's seal of approval:

"The Ramones, along with most music lovers, were very aware of the Beach Boys.  We were big music fans and we’d talk about all types bands, musicians, our influences. I think you can hear the resemblance in 'I Wanna Be Sedated' and the end of the song—BaBaBaBa I wanna be sedated ... [This] adaptation of 'Rockaway Beach' is killer. Beach Boys to the max."

I don't know ... take a listen and judge for yourself:

Pete Yorn Debuts Two New Songs, Teases New Album

New music from old friends makes for the best new music - and for the first time since 2016's Arranging Times - we have new music from Pete Yorn.

Yorn released a lyric video for “Calm Down” (directed by Max Goldblatt) and audio for “Can’t Stop You” (hear them both below)

When reflecting on his 20+ year career, Yorn said:

“I know I have changed internally in the way that I process the world and react to the world.  The coolest thing about the older songs is how they seem to grow with me.”

No release date on the new LP yet ... but enjoy these songs in the meantime

Vampire Weekend's Star Studded Video For the Song 'This Life' [WATCH]

"This Life", the latest single from Vampire Weekend's 18 song album Father of the Bride starts off with the lyric - 'Baby, I know pain is as natural as the rain, I just thought it didn't rain in California

And now the band has released a video for the song that captures that sentiment about the Golden State.

The star studded video - with cameos by Danielle Haim (and song back up vocalist), Kyle Field of Little Wings, Mark Ronson, Ariel Rechtshaid, Jovan Hill, Simi & Haze, Mark Ronson, Despot and Sophie, was directed by Emmett Malloy.

Vampire Weekend will appear at Firefly - playing the FIREFLY stage at 7:30 pm (no - they're not even headling .. so you can get out of there before the traffic gets bad while the 'kids' watch Post Malone.

Until then - enjoy Ezra Koenig and his merry band taking a road trip in the  "This Life" Video

Nirvanamania is here ... Kurt Cobain

We've seen some rock n roll memorabilia sell at auction for some ridiculous prices - most recently David Bowie's unreleased demos or a Fender ukulele signed by Billie Eilish - but now is seems that Nirvana is getting in on the auction action.

2 items from the late Kurt Cobain's personal collection went up for auction this past weekend and commanded som serious cash.

The big ticket item - a cardigan sweater Cobain wore in 1993, during Nirvana's final photo shoot when the band was preparing to release their final album, In Utero.

Julien’s Auctions - who hosted the auction notes:

“The shoot was meant to take place in Central Park in New York City, but due to Cobain being sick just hours before, the shoot was relocated to the basement of the hotel where the band was staying. Cobain showed up three hours late to the shoot, and immediately asked for a bucket due to his nausea.”

The sweater sold for $75,000 ....

Another item that sold, with some local ties - was a paper plate ... but not just any paper plate - the pizza grease soaked plate contains the set list the band used at an April 23, 1990 gig at DC's 930 Club.  I guess this was before the club gave out cup cakes :P

Soundgarden announce massive new live album and concert film

To commemorate their 35th anniversary, alt-rock icons Soundgarden have announced a massive project: a live album and concert film focused on their special Live from the Artists Den event in 2013.

The February 17th, 2013 concert at The Wiltern in Los Angeles featured a 29 song / two-and-a-half-hour set full of fan favorites, rarities, and hits .

Kim Thayil said of the project:

“We were very proud and excited to document the performance of our new material from King Animal, and to celebrate with each other and our fans”

Chris Cornell's widow Vicky added:

“This live show was really special, and I know how much fun Chris had that night. The idea of giving fans the opportunity to experience it in its entirety is something I’m proud to share with them.”

Live from the Artists Den film and live album are set to be released July 26th on Blu-ray, 2xCD, or 4xLP.  There's also a limited-edition Super Deluxe box set that features 30 bonus minutes of interviews with the band.

Hear The Raconteurs New Single, 'Help Me Stranger'

We're getting excited for Help Us Stranger the new record from The Raconteurs - it IS the first record they've released in over a decade.

And now we have another single from the record- due out via Third Man Records on June 21.

The song “Help Me Stranger” was debuted at the Third Man Anniversary show back in April and has the typical laid-back groove the band is known for.

In addition to the album - the band will embark on an extensive tour that includes a stop at The Anthem in Washington DC (tickets on sale HERE

So grab your tickets to the show and enjoy this Yasuhiko Shimizu directed video featuring Jack White playing with babies and the band posing for press photos with an endearing awkwardness.

Hear Lana Del Rey's cover of Sublime

Lana Del Rey fans have been waiting since 2017 for some new music from the singer, songwriter, record producer, poet, model, and music video director.  She's promised that her new album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, will be out by year’s end - but we're still waiting on any solid details on it.

So in the meantime - fans will have to settle for a cover of Sublimes 1997 track “Doin’ Time”.  LDR puts her personal  'touch of sepia toned sadness to the song' while 'adding a bit of canned glamor to the tune of infidelity'

The cover was made for the new Sublime documentary, which recently screened at the Tribeca Film Festival.

David Byrne announces he's bringing his American Utopia show to Broadway

If you were lucky enough to catch David Byrne's American Utopia tour (locally it was at both Merriweather Post Pavilion and The Anthem) you know what an amazingly choreographed show it was - with a completely mobile band playing songs from the No. 1 charting album American Utopia with more of Byrne’s classic solo tracks and Talking Heads material.

If you missed it - you may have one more shot to see it ... David Byrne has announced he's bringing the show to Broadway, with the help of of Rob Sinclair (lighting), Pete Keppler (sound), Karl Mansfield (Musical Director), Alex Timbers (Production Consultant), and Annie-B Parso (Choreography and Musical Staging). American Utopia will run from October 20th, 2019 through January 19th, 2020 at the Hudson Theatre.

Prior to the NYC run - the production will be staged at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre for an 18-performance run from September 11th through September 28th.

You can get tickets to the Broadway from the Hudson Theatre site

And tickets for the Boston shows are available via the Emerson Colonial site.

When asked about bringing American Utopia to Broadway, Byrne wrote:

“Because of how theatrical the show is, others started telling me ‘this needs to go to Broadway.’ Why not? But what did that mean? Parked in a beautiful Broadway theater we can perfect the sound, the lights, the movement.  I thought to myself that this new context might be good- it might bring out the narrative arc a little bit more, to make it just a little more explicit. I asked Alex Timbers, whom I’d worked with twice before on musicals, to help. He brought some original and insightful ideas to the room, ideas I was too close to imagine, and we used those to build on what we had.”

Watch a trailer for the theatrical production below.

Private Artist Showcase Throwback - That Time Hozier Played St Anne's Parish [VIDEO]

Thanks to an astute listener (shout out to Katy Owings aka @ktkixit ) we were reminded that 5 years ago today - long before he was playing sold out arenas and theaters - we were taken to church - literally - by Hozier - for one of the most epic Private Artist Showcases. EVER.

Here's a little walk down memory lane recalling that day -

It was March of 2014 - and Bob Waugh had just returned from South By South West in Austin Texas.  In between drinking Tito's and eating tacos - he had a chance to see a young Irish singer song writer the name of Andrew Hozier-Byrne aka Hozier perform ... when he returned to home, Bob knew he had to get Hozier to come through Annapolis for a Private Artist Showcase - before his career skyrocketed.

Bob also knew that this had to be a special showcase and since the song being played at the time was Take Me To Church - some calls were made - and the venue was booked - St. Anne's Parish in Downtown Annapolis.

The day came and Hozier came to town and a small group of listeners were privy to a special 6 song performance ... not only did it make an impression on them - Hozier himself was impressed

Now here are some details you may not know:

Katie O'Malley - wife of then governor Martin O'Malley is a huge Hozier fan and was at the show.  Afterwards - she invited Hozier and the RNR staff back to the Governor's Mansion for a little after party.  After touring the house, sharing stories over a few Guinness - Governor Martin O'Malley and Hozier had a little jam session in the living room!

We're not sure that we could ever recreate that day with Hozier now - but we can relive it through the amazing video footage provided by Sugar Farms Productions.

Watch Mick Jagger

The Rolling Stones were forced to postpone their 2019 Summer Tour six weeks ago when it was revealed that Mick Jagger was to undergo heart surgery.

We don't have any new dates for the tour - but the 75 year old front man seems to be ready to rock.  He posted the following video of himself practicing what appear to be his stage dance moves ... just one month after having aortic valve replacement surgery.

In the video - he's not dancing to a Stones tune (it's “Techno Fan” by the Wombats)

But it clearly indicates that Mick is ready to give his fans the show they were expecting this summer - except those people who bought Jazz Fest tickets ... that ship has sailed :/

Move over Red Bull and Hennessy - Jenny Lewis wants to sell you some weed

Hanging out with Jenny Lewis is cool ... but have you ever hung out with Jenny Lewis, on weed?

via GIPHY

Well, you might not have the chance to light up with Jenny Lewis in person - but for now - if you find yourself Southern California, you can stop by a dispensary and pick up a 5 pack of  her very own marijuana pre-rolled joints.  “The Rabbit Hole,” is a collaboration with Santa Barbara area cannabis company Glass House Farms

Flood Magazine reports:

The weed in Lewis’ joints will be “a light Sour Diesel sativa with 16.3 percent THC content,” which should equal a very chill, giggly high, ideal for music festivals. Fun fact: the seeds for “The Rabbit Hole” were allegedly first distributed at a Grateful Dead show in 1991.

While the marijuana used in the Rabbit Hole Joints isn't her own strain - Jenny Lewis has updated the story with the news that she plans on having a strand of her own

In addition to this being the band's first time on stage together, (they will play a few festivals this summer, but c'mon - can we get a proper tour?) the band also debuted new song titled “The Adults Are Talking” and played a bizarre cover version of Erasure’s 1988 hit, “A Little Respect” - with a little Prince mixed in as well.

Two Legends, One Stage: David Byrne helps Mavis Staples Celebrate Her 80th Birthday [VIDEO]

Mavis Staples may not turn 80 until July - but the mythic and eternal soul/gospel singer can celebrate whenever she damn well feels like it :)

Last week, at New York's famed Apollo Theater - Staples celebrated her 80th birthday with a big all-star show that included tons of artists performing with and to paying  tribute Staples: Norah Jones, Warren Haynes, Maggie Rogers, Hiss Golden Messenger, Lake Street Dive, The Lone Bellow, and Jon Batiste.

David Byrne also joined in the celebration, taking the stage to perform the Talking Heads classic - Slippery People ... the performance had a special place in the night - since after the Talking Heads released the song in 1983, The Staple Singers released a cover of the song (with Byrne playing guitar on the track) and it was a minor hit - was a minor hit — reaching #109 on the pop charts, #22 R&B.

And in 2017, Mavis Staples recorded another “Slippery People” cover with Arcade Fire.

So here's video of the 2019 collab, the original, the first cover and the Arcade Fire version

Watch Vampire Weekend Perform with HAIM on The Tonight Show

It's been a busy few weeks for Vampire Weekend - they played a pop up show in an LA park on Earth Day, they played another pop up show in an NYC park on the day their album Father of the Bride was released, then they played an 'official' 7 hour/3 set album release show at New York’s Webster Hall as part of this year’s Red Bull Music Festival (!)

The band continued to promote FOTB on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon - performing “Jerusalem, New York, Berlin” and "This Life".  It was the first late night TV appearance for the band since 2014 ...

Father of the Bride features contributions from former member Rostam Batmangli, Steve Lacy, Ludwig Göransson, Hans Zimmer, iLoveMakonnen, Mark Ronson and and Danielle Haim of the band HAIM ... so it wasn't that much of a shock when Danielle and her sisters joined VW on the tonight show .. check out the performances below!

Woodstock 50: Michael Lang Needs to Raise $30M by Friday For The Festival To Go On

OK ... how did Woodstock 50 get so ahead of itself ...

The on again // off again saga with the Woodstock 50 continues.

News broke that Dentsu - the fest's financial backers - have backed out, which they assumed would cancel the festival  ... after they already paid $30 million to the festival  headliners including Jay-Z, Dead & Company, The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Miley Cyrus and Chance the Rapper.

Cue Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang and his 'hold my beer moment'  ... holding a media blitz he claims he will need to raise the additional $30 million needed to stage the three-day concert, Aug. 16-18, at Watkins Glen International speedway, 150 miles east of the original 1969 festival site.

To further complicate things - event producer Superfly has also backed out of the festival - which was immediately followed by Lang saying  Dan Berkowitz and his firm CID Entertainment would replace them as producers.

So basically it is crystal clear that nothing is clear about Woodstock 50 ... I guess the only thing they have going got them is that no one has purchased tickets to the show yet

Cage the Elephant & Beck Drop an Amazingly Retro Sci-Fi Video for

Cage the Elephant and Beck combined forces for the song Night Running, one of our favorite jams of  the moment ... pretty sure it will end up in a lot of our top 10 lists come December ... And now we have a visualizer for the reggae fueled song that uses antiquated video technology and decades-old special effects and to tell a sci-fi story.

Director Jennifer Juniper Stratford

...wanted to create a realm where a super computer that hosts a simulation program that "creates a series of artificial worlds.  While Beck would appear to live within the software as a master control, while Matt would be transported to different worlds and new identities leaving him to question what is real.”

The National Release New Single 'Hairpin Turns' [VIDEO]

We have another single to tide us over as we patiently await for The National's new album, I Am Easy to Find.

The latest single, a piano-driven jaunt that features guest vocals from Gail Ann Dorsey and Lisa Hannigan - is titled  “Hairpin Turns.”

The release comes with a video directed by Academy Award nominee Mike Mills and features a dancer (Sharon Eyal moving) making her way around a blank white room while the band members and singers perform around her.

Mills said of the video:

“The video is a very simple portrait of the band (and the friends who helped make the song) and the song itself: You see all the instruments that make up the song in isolation, even hear them recorded live on set over the album version, kind of like showing you the tracks that make up the song,”

Tickets are still available for The National with Courtney Barnett at The Anthem on June 19  HERE

More Game of Thrones Cameos - this time it was Jack Bevan and Jimmy Smith from FOALS [PICS]

Another day, another rock star reveals they were extras on the Game of Thrones episode The Long Night ... Which apparently was rated one of the worst episodes of the series.

We now know that Foals drummer Jack Bevan and guitarist Jimmy Smith appeared as extras in the show's latest episode which featured The Battle of Winterfell - one of the longest and most expensive battle scenes to ever be depicted in either TV or film.

The two revealed this via their Instagrams ... this really gives new meaning to the Foals song 'Mountain At My Gates' :)
