John Krasinski's Some Good News Network is What We All Need Right Now

Why is it that the news only seems to report on the negative narratives?  That's a question we all seem to be asking - especially now.  The positive, feel good stories are always buried in the second or third segment of the broadcast ...

Well, John Krasinski - aka Jim from The Office - has started his own news network - SGN (Some Good News network)

He started the project with a tweet - asking people to send him some inspirational stories that are making them feel better these days

And the response was unbelievable .. who knew - people want to hear positive news :)

He got over 1,000 retweets and 20,000 likes ... so he decided to start his own network - via YouTube.  So far - as of March 31- he's only had one broadcast - but it covers a lot of positive stories, features some special guests, and even hints at a reunion of The Office!

Check out SGN Season One Episode One :

Maryland makers lend their skills to help produce equipment for medical workers during coronavirus pandemic

People are coming together and stepping up to help in some truly amazing ways to help out during the COVID-19 pandemic.  From purchasing food from a closed restaurant to feed a family in need to distillers replacing liquor production with hand sanitizer production to  simply staying inside - it is amazing to see people working together to help the world through this crisis.

Some Maryland Makers are also pitching in - by making surgical masks and face shields for health care workers.

When Baltimore Center Stage had to close its doors to audiences - their production staff, led by Costume Director David Burdick, decided to use their down productively by creating cloth hospital masks for their neighbor - Mercy Hospital Center.

The staff consulted with Mercy Hospital and CDC guidelines and began delivering the masks this week.

David told Fox 45 News -

"This is a great thing that we have this focus and this is a thing we can focus on right now and hope to help people out"

Another group pitching in is Baltimore's Open Works - who is taking part in the  Makers Unite! - with their Face Shield Project

Through this project Open Works has started a volunteer based collaborative project to create  face shields medical workers are in dire need of using 3D printers.  These shields, which are being made using a design developed by Prusa Labs in the Czech Republic, when used with lower-grade surgical masks (like the ones mentioned above) can provide the CDC-recommended level of protection for health care workers and first responders on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This project is truly a local collaboration- with anyone able to sign up to help (as long as they meet the criteria)

The group We The Builders is organizing the printing of the parts needed while Open Works is collecting parts, sanitizing, assembling, and packaging them.  The group Innovation Works is dealing with taking orders from  health care providers and making sure the orders are fulfilled.

For those who don't have a printer and want to help - financial donations are being accepted HERE

Matthews will play a 30 minute set from his home on Thursday March 26th, at 8pm that will be streamed on Verizon’s Twitter account as well as on Yahoo

The series is being dubbed "a weekly streaming entertainment series that will include music, gaming, comedy and more in support of small businesses affected by COVID-19.”

Verizon has announced they will donate up to $5 million to the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, who in turn will “use the funds to provide grants of up to $10,000 to businesses facing immediate financial pressure because of COVID-19..."

During the broadcasts, viewers will be "encouraged to tag their favorite local businesses and make a purchase in advance for when the crisis is over and the businesses reopen.”

Verizon’s chairman-CEO, Hans Vestberg said:

"Small businesses are being impacted in extraordinary ways as we all fight against the spread of COVID-19.  These companies provide employment opportunities, goods, services, and gathering places that are the soul of local communities. ‘Pay it Forward Live’ will give all Americans an opportunity to help their favorite small businesses survive this unprecedented hardship.”

Maryland receives an 'A' on the Social Distancing Scorecard, USA gets a 'B' overall

Up until a few weeks ago, Social Distancing was a term most of us had not heard of before (we see you introverts)

But now, more than ever, the art of deliberately increasing the physical space between people, is a crucial step to take in order to help stop the spread of COVID-19 / Coronavirus.  It is recomended that staying at least six feet away from other people can lessen your chances of catching COVID-19.

Relatives visit a family member in a nursing home through a window due to social distnacing

We are seeing this happening all over - in Maryland, non essential businesses have been ordered to close, restaurants and bars are only offering carry out and delivery food and drink orders, and stores that are open, like grocery and hardware stores, are taping X's on their floors to show where customers should stand while waiting in line.

And now websites like Facebook, Google, and Instagram are taking their users data to show how well they are (and aren't) practicing social distancing.

And just this week - a company called Unacast has taken the data to creat a “Social Distancing Scoreboard” giving grades on a national, state, and county level.

According to the World Health Organization and the CDC, social distancing is currently the most effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19. We created this interactive Scoreboard, updated daily, to empower organizations to measure and understand the efficacy of social distancing initiatives at the local level.

Locally, Maryland has received an A (the national average is a B) with Montgomery, Carroll, Calvert, Anne Arundel, and Baltimore Counties leading the way

Nationwide - Washington DC, Alaska, Nevada, New Jersey, and Rhode Islnad score the best with Oregon, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming getting the worst scores.

Feed Anne Arundel - raising money today to pay local restaurants to make meals for those in need

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic - we have seen an overwhelming response from the community to help local businesses ... Facebook groups like Annapolis Area Take-Out have been set up to communicate what restaurants are serving food have been set up. The City of Annapolis even set up a  Google List  showing those restaurants that are still serving food.

But Monica Alvarado, of Bread and Butter Kitchen in Eastport and Ryan Sirmons, Lead Organizer of  Anne Arundel Connecting Together (ACT) have taken things a step further - setting up a GoFundMe fundraiser called Feed Anne Arundel to raise money to buy meals from local restaurants - to feed the less fortunate.  By doing this - they hope to allow restaurants to pay their employees and keep their lights on while serving meals to those in need.

They have set a goal of $50,000 and in just 4 days - they have raised over $10,000.

The full statement of their mission states:

Our goal is simple - support local restaurants and provide meals for community members in need during the COVID 19 crisis.

The current situation is unprecedented and is having a devastating effect on local businesses, especially restaurants. Many have had to lay off employees or shut down completely.  In parallel, many families are struggling to make ends meet and providing delicious, healthy meals is becoming increasingly difficult as grocery stores are running out of everything.

We are raising money today so that we can pay local restaurants to make food for those in need. This will allow restaurants to pay their employees and keep their lights on. We are working with restaurants throughout the county to ensure the greatest coverage.

We have connected with AA County Partnership for Children, Youth, and Families. In the immediate future, we are planning to join them at their mobile food pantries to provide prepared meals in addition to groceries. There are three scheduled over the next three weeks and we will need to provide meals to feed over 600 people.

Please consider donating to our fund. Every penny counts. Your donation will support so many people - from cooks and servers to local families in need - the ripple effect will be felt across our community.

With their venues closed, I.M.P. announces a Family Fund to assist their staff members in these difficult times.

With the announcement that the ban of gatherings in DC has been extended through April 27, concert promoter I.M.P. has developed a plan to assist their employees  that will be out of work.

The I.M.P. Family Fund has been set up to assist the hourly staff members that will out of work until they are able to reopen.  This includes staff members of The Anthem, 9:30 Club, The Lincoln Theatre, and Merriweather Post Pavilion.

And you can help too - because through March 28, I.M.P. will the value of every gift card purchased with a donation to the I.M.P. Family Fund.  These gift cards can be used for tickets to a future show, merch or concessions.

April 6th — Kool and the Gang

U2 has been on hiatus since the end of their Joshua Tree tour in 2019 - their last show was the band’s first-ever concert in India on December 15th, 2019.

But on March 17, 2020 - St. Patrick's Day - lead singer Bono took to the band's social media to debut a new song he wrote earlier this week and dedicated it to the people of Italy - who are currently on lockdown due to the coronavirus

The song - which he sings from Dublin, Ireland and is apparently called 'Let Your Love Be Known' - was accompanied with a message: "For the Italians who inspired it ...for the Irish… for ANYONE who this St. Patrick’s day is in a tight spot and still singing. For the doctors, nurses, carers on the frontline, it’s you we’re singing to.”

The songs lyrics -

“I walk through the streets of Dublin and no one was near.

Yes, I don’t know you

No I didn’t think I didn’t care

You live so very far away/Just across the square

You can’t touch, but you can sing across rooftops

Sing on the phone/Sing and promise me you won’t stop

Sing your love be known.”

Were inspired by the by the Italians who have been singing through open windows during their country's nationwide lockdown.

Be it with DCFC, Postal Service, or solo I have always been grateful for the honor you have bestowed upon us by choosing to congregate en masse around our music. Some of you have traveled great distances and/or shelled out large sums of money to see us play and that has never been lost on me. So in this crazy and unprecedented time, I’d like to return the favor by coming to YOU.?
?
For the next few weeks I will be playing songs everyday from my home studio. We will be streaming on YouTube / Facebook at 4pm PST daily – link in bio. We’re still working out the details but I’m hoping to take some requests and maybe even have a guest or two stop by digitally. The first show will be tomorrow. It will assuredly be a little wonky and glitchy but we’re gonna do our best.

Hey Everyone,? ? I know you are all really freaked out right now. I am too. And while I’m proud that we’re all doing the necessary things at the moment to help flatten the curve, I know it has left us all incredibly isolated.? ? But because we’re all going through this nightmare together we are quite literally NOT alone. Our lives and stories are all linked, maybe more now than they have ever been.? ? Be it with DCFC, Postal Service, or solo I have always been grateful for the honor you have bestowed upon us by choosing to congregate en masse around our music. Billy Joel's

Billy Joel penned the song We Didn't Start The Fire after a conversation he had with a teenage Sean Lennon - who expressed his anxiety over the events transpiring in the late 80's.  Joel recalls Lennon saying "Nothing happened in the Fifties and early Sixties" Billy's retort - “Whoa, didn’t you ever hear of the Korean War, the Suez Canal, the Hungarian Freedom Fighters?”

Joel started jotting down events from the past 4 decades and produced the song which would appear on on his 1989 album Storm Front:

Fast forward to 2020 - with the COVID-19 virus impacting the entire globe,

Matt Warburton (TV writer for The Simpsons and The Mindy Project.) sent out a tweet evoking the 1989 classic:

The tweet prompted many tweeters to take the suggestion and pen their own updated verses to the song, including Brittany Barkholtz, a St. Paul MN therapist, piano teacher and Billy Joel fan :

Ways you can help support the local economy during the coronavirus crisis

Maryland's Governor Larry Hogan has taken some unprecedented steps in order to help curb the spread of Covid - 19 (the coronavirus).  This included ordering the closure of all Maryland bars, restaurants, movie theaters and gyms.

While it should be noted that grocery stores, banks, pharmacies and other essential services will remain open - the closing of many business will have a devastating impact on our local economy.

Here are a few simple ways that you can help these businesses stay afloat during these times:

1.  Order carry out from your favorite restaurants  -Yes, the governor ordered the restaurants and bars to be closed to the public - many are planning on offering carry out and delivery.  Give your favorite place a call and see what they are offering ... and don't forget to tip :) The service industry is getting hit hard too!

2.  Order gift cards online from local businesses - buying a gift card now that you can use later puts money straight in the pocket of a local retailer that can help them pay employees, bills and more ... and for a limited time-  Visit Annapolis  is matching any gift card purchased

3.  Support local musicians - many local musicians are having gigs closed - so they have resorted to hosting online concerts.  Be sure to tune in, tip them online, and head to their website and buy some merch!

4.  Buy tickets to future concerts - speaking of live music - there are plenty of concerts that haven't been cancelled ... check out your favorite venue's website and see what shows they have coming up and purchase tickets to something this summer or fall!

5.  Promote your local businesses - even if you're not in a place to buy gift cards or merch or carry out - you can help spread the word that local businesses are open via your own social media ... share / like / retweet when you see a local business promoting their operation during this pandemic.

The Killers delay US concert ticket sales - will donate a portion of the proceeds to local organizations helping service industry employees impacted by the Coronavirus

The Killers announced last week that they will bring their Imploding the Mirage Tour to the states this fall - including a October 3rd date at the Capital One Arena in Washington DC.

(Olivia Bee | courtesy of Island Records)

However - due to Corona Virus pandemic - the band decided to delay the on sale of the tickets for the tour ... but - they are doing something pretty cool for those feeling the effects of the national emergency - they will be donating a portion of their ticket income to charities helping out help people whose service industry jobs are impacted by the Coronavirus.

In a statement, the band said:

A quick note to say that tickets for our late summer/fall shows will not be going on sale just yet. The news is changing every hour around Coronavirus and, ultimately, we want you, our fans, to stay focused on prevention and remaining safe and cautious right now.

In addition, once we go on sale, we will be providing a portion of our ticketing income to local organizations who help people whose service industry jobs are impacted by the Coronavirus in each of our tour cities. We are taking this personally. Both we and our families have had these jobs and our hearts go out to those affected.

If anything changes again, we'll let you know; in the meantime, we're more excited than ever to sing these new songs with you, and can't wait to see you soon. Watch this space for the updated ticket information!

In addition to the new song Caution - the band also shared a Mr. Brightside handwashing video ... check out both below:

Gov. Larry Hogan ordered the shutdown of all bars, restaurants, movie theaters and gyms in Maryland to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic

Effective at 5 p.m on Monday March 16, 2020, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan ordered the shutdown of all bars, restaurants, movie theaters and gyms in Maryland in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Grocery stores and pharmacies will also remain open.  Carry-out and food delivery service will still be available

He said in his press conference (which you can view below):

“We’re being more aggressive, I think, than some people... (but) By these actions, we’re going to stop the spread and we’re going to save lives.”

The announcement comes one day after the governor ordered the indefinite closing of all  casinos, racetracks and off-track betting parlors.

As of Monday (3/16/20) the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Maryland was 37.

Record Store Day 2020 has been postponed until June 20th

Yet another event has been postponed due to the coronavirus - Record Store Day 2020

Originally scheduled for April 18th, the event has been moved to June 20th.

RSD organizers said in a statement:

“At the risk of stating the obvious, no one knows what things will look like in any given place over the next five weeks, but it is imperative that hard decisions for that time period need to be made right now, using current facts. There is no perfect solution. There is no easy answer...

So, we’ve decided that, this year, our best possible move is to change the date of Record Store Day to Saturday, June 20th. We think that this takes into consideration the recommendations of the many doctors and scientists lending their expertise to help in the Coronavirus pandemic, as well as the many other individuals at the World Health Organization (WHO), Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other agencies tasked with the difficult job of getting us through this crisis ...

We’re working with all of our partners and our stores to make this change as smooth as possible for everyone who participates in Record Store Day, including the customers, the record stores, the artists, labels and more...

Record Store Day happens everywhere, every year, and we want to hold our party when everyone can gather around safely to celebrate life, art, music and the culture of the indie record store"

Mike Campbell Postpones Tour, WRNR Private Artist Showcase and Album Release Due to Health Issues

Mike Campbell, of the Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, and most recently the Dirty Knobs -  has announced he has decided to postpone his upcoming tour to deal with “health issues.”

In a message to WRNR (Mike was scheduled to perform for a private group of listeners at Rams Head On Stage on March 17th), Mike said:

Hey everyone, Mike here.

On Sunday night my doctors discovered some health issues which while fully treatable, need to be addressed before going out on tour.

The good news, well really it’s great news, is that I’m going to be just fine.

The bad news, and I say this with much frustration, is the tour which was scheduled to start next week will need to be postponed and rescheduled for September.  Subsequently, we’ll also need to postpone the album release until September 18th.

We can’t be at New Orleans’ Jazzfest this April but the already announced shows from June onwards with Chris Stapleton and Zac Brown Band will go on as planned.

If you bought tickets to any of our headline shows, they will still be good for the rescheduled dates which are listed below. If you are unable to make the new date, you can obtain a refund at your point of purchase and we hope to see you another time soon.

I know that many of you made plans to travel to the upcoming shows and I’m so sorry that those plans have been upended.

However, health is the most important thing and I want to bring you the best show possible. I truly appreciate everyone’s understanding.

The Knobs and I are eagerly looking forward to seeing you and sharing more music with you, just a bit later than we had hoped.

With love,

Mike

Mike Campbell is a member of the rock elite.  He co-wrote so many of the Tom PEtty and the Heeartbreakers hits, including ‘Runnin’ Down a Dream,” “Refugee” and “Here Comes My Girl.” He's also worked with Fleetwood Mac, Don Henley, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Bob Seger, Randy Newman and Stevie Nicks.  Not a bad resume!

Sending you all the positive vibes for a speedy recovery Mike!

For over 40 years, this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has flipped genres like rock, punk, and new wave on their heads becoming both a “Liverpool legend” (The Washington Post) and an enduring American favorite.

Described as “one of the greatest living voices in rock today” (Spin), Grace Potter returns to Wolf Trap in support of her emotionally revealing second solo album, Daylight (2019). The members of Greensky Bluegrass have created their own version of bluegrass music, mixing the acoustic stomp of a stringband with the rule-breaking spirit of rock ’n’ roll. “The members are virtuosos in the genre. Live shows are often transcendent musical experiences. When the band takes off, it can rock like a countrified hurricane” (NPR).

Foo Fighters will celebrate their 25th anniversary with DC Jam Festival - an all-day all-night celebration at FedExField

And while the show gave us our first chance to check out the gorgeous new venue - the band was kind enough to share some behind the scenes footage from the show (are they pre-show planking?)

Check out the footage below and if you missed out - or the band left you wanting more - don't miss them at Merriweather Post Pavilion on August 22nd with Daryl Hall and John Oates

David Byrne gives one of SNL

Former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney was the show's first ever Leap Day host ... but it was the musical guest who was the real star.

Former Talking Head frontman David Byrne brought his broadway adaptation of the Amercian Utopia Broadway show to the top of the Rock ... and it brought the house down.  He even appeared in a skit - a la Jack White did the last time Mulaney hosted.

If you are unfamiliar with the performance - it features Byrne - barefoot - performing alongside a troupe of musicians playing wireless intruments.  It is really amazing.  For the show - Byrne performed the Talking Heads classic - Once in a Lifetime and the BPA song he's featured on - Toe Jam.
