Annapolis based band Pressing Strings have offered up solid music to us over the years- both with original songs and covers ... but their latest cover has got to be one of our favorites ... the band has offered their signature sound to Standing Outside a Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand - the 90's classic by Primitive Radio Gods.

Let's face it - 2020 had a lot of forgetable moments ... but we DID get a lot of amazing music at least ... and while one of our favorite things about getting new music from our favorite or just discovered artists is seeing them perform it live ... and while we weren't able to do that in person for the most part of the year - we were able to do it virtually ... like when Black Pumas played our Full Moon Party

2020 ... the year  Foo Fighters were to celebrate their 25th anniversary in grand fashion ... a van tour, a rock festival, a new album and whatever else Dave Grohl and co. had up their sleeves.  But 2020 gonna 2020 - so instead - the band is celebrating with  a new short film, titled  'Times Like Those'

This unofficial holiday has been met with another day of shopping – focusing on local businesses though – with shoppers encouraged to support locally owned and operated  businesses in their communities the following day – Small Business Saturday 

Annapolis is a community made up of 100+ boutiques, shops, bars, restaurants, galleries and more – that all need our support this holiday season – and just so happened to be the backdrop for the Small Business Saturday feature on NBC’s The Today Show … with a special nod to The Boatyard’s crab cakes -that had us wanting one for Breakfast … no judgment

So if you can – please shop local this holiday season – many Annapolis businesses have extended their hours, plus Downtown Annapolis Partnership still has three (scaled back) Midnight Madness events planned –  with businesses staying open til midnight the first three Thursdays in December.  If you aren’t comfortable coming downtown to shop in person – DAP has an extensive list of links to our local businesses that offer online shopping as well - SHOP HERE

Foo Fighters celebrated their 25th anniversary in July - and the *plan* was for the band to have a gigantic celebration at FedEx Field  ... well - 2020 had other plans for us and we didn't get to have DC Jam.  

But Dave and the Foos still want to have a little recognition for their silver anniversary - with a live stream video called 'Times Like Those' 

We don't know much about the celebration - but the YouTube link makes is sound like it will be a photo and video retrospective : 

 

Maybe the 25th anniversary year didn't go *quite* as planned but we were still able to come together for a look back at the last 25 years.

They may have only released on album - 2003's Give Up - but The Postal Service -  Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello's unique project - remains very popular in 2020 (in case you didn't know- the band got its name from the way the album was produced, the two were never in the studio together and would mail each other their parts on tape )

Sesame Street has some pretty amazing special guests lined up for its 51st (!) season ... including Issa Rae, Hailee Steinfeld, Ayesha Curry and Maggie Rogers.  

Maggie will appear on an episode where she goes on backyard camping trip with Elmo, Abby, Rudy and Charlie - and during a search for camping essentials - marshmallows - Rogers teaches the gang a musical lesson about  nocturnal creatures  called It's Nighttime.  

Everyone seems to love the song - except for Oscar the Grouch - duh.

Sesame Street will air its new episodes on HBO Max for now and then on PBS Kids in the fall of 2021

On November 18 - Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder hosted the Venture Into Cures benefit, a two hour streaming event  raising money and awareness for his Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Fund.  

Vedder has described Epidermolysis Bullosa as "about the most insane skin disorder you can imagine ... And when you realize it also affects the internal organs, then you see it as diabolical.”

During the broadcast - Vedder debuted two new songs -   “Matter of Time” and “Say Hi.”  Both songs were inspired by Epidermolysis Bullosa - “Say Hi” is for six-year-old EB patient Eli Meyer and the ballad “Matter of Time” was “written for everyone worldwide afflicted with Epidermolysis Bullosa.”

Bleachers have teamed up with fellow New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen  for a new single, titled 'chinatown' 

The song arrives with a Carlotta Kohl directed video which features Bleachers' Jack Antonoff wearing a shirt that reads  “Welcome to New Jersey, now go home” and riding in a Cadillac with Bruce Springsteen down the highway.

In a statement, Antonoff says:

“chinatown” starts in NYC and travels to new jersey. that pull back to the place i am from mixed with terror of falling in love again. having to show your cards to someone and the shock when you see them for yourself. thinking you know yourself and where you are from…. having to see yourself through somebody who you want to stay… i started to write this song with these ideas ringing in my head. to further understand who you are pushes you to further understand where you are from and what that looks and sounds like. there are pieces in that that are worth carrying forever and pieces worth letting die."

Both Antonoff and Springsteen have been keeping busy as of late - last month, Bruce released his 20th album, Letter to You. While Antonoff has been building his producer resume - contributing to Taylor Swift’s Folklore, the Chicks’ Gaslighter, Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! and  her upcoming LP Chemtrails Over the Country Club.

The Flaming Lips have been teased it ... tested it ...  and now they're doing it: playing  the "World's First Space Bubble Concert"

Yep the band and the audience are all in giant plastic bubbles -- at Oklahoma City's The Criterion on December 11.

Only 100 tickets were sold- and we didnt snag any - so we'll have to wait to see how it turns out in December 

On election night - Phoebe Bridgers tweeted "if Trump loses I will cover 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Goo Dolls," 

And now - she's made good on that promise - with a little help from Maggie Rogers - releasing the track to Bandcamp - with all proceeds from this cover will go to Stacey Abrams' Fair Fight.  

Phoebe writes:

Jake of Illiterate Light explained the collab in an interview with Bringin It Backwards:

We met Devon backstage at the Newport Folk Festival in 2019 and hit it off immediately. We crossed paths so often on tour in the following months that it just made sense to do a collaboration and full US co-headlining tour the following year. The dates were all planned for Fall 2020 and we had studio time booked in Nashville for the three of us in March, but it all came to a screeching halt with the initial outbreak of COVID-19. As everything around us shut down, we forged through and wrote “Freedom” together on Zoom, finished the recording from our home studios without ever stepping in the same room, and now we are finally getting together to play it live, streamed from Brooklyn Bowl Nashville + Fans.com on Friday, November 13th!

The US Navy’s 7th Fleet Band's Orient Express ensemble is known for their covers - but this Veteran's Day, they have decided to pay tribute to one of their own with a video tribute to Navy veteran and music legend Art Neville.  

A video of the band performing The Meters’ “Hey Pocky A-Way” in honor of the New Orleans icon was posted to Facebook - along with this message: 

“In honor of Veteran’s Day we would like to pay tribute to the life and service of Art Neville, a U.S. Navy veteran and an accomplished musician” 

 

Accompanying the music was this military history of Mr Neville: In 1958, Art joined the U.S. Navy serving as a Commissaryman, and spent part of his tour aboard the USS Independence.  Art returned to civilian life in New Orleans in 1962. 

We join the The US Navy’s 7th Fleet Band in saluting Art and all those who have served in the US Armed Forces 

Julien’s Auctions has added a few high profile guitars to their “Icons & Idols Trilogy: Rock ‘N’ Roll” - taking place on Friday December 4th & Saturday, December 5th 

Just added to the list of items hitting the auction block are two guitars played by Jimi Hendrix and one from Bob Marley's collection 

From Hendrix - bidders can get their hands on a left-handed Fender Stratocaster  with an an Olympic White finish, alder body, and maple neck constructed in approximately 1969 (based on its serial number) and a late-Sixties William C. Stahl Style 8 acoustic guitar made by the Larson Brothers,  Both guitars are predicted to fetch upwards of $500,000. 

From Bob Marley’s guitar cabinet - a 1975 Ovation 1612-4 Custom Balladeer acoustic-electric guitar with a natural spruce top and a shallow back, ebony fingerboard and diamond inlays. A bargain - seeing as it will only sell for $80,000 to $100,000.

These guitars are added to the 700 other  historic artifacts from some of the most iconic and legendary music artists,  including Prince, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Madonna,  Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison, the Rolling Stones, Queen, David Bowie, The Police, Guns N’ Roses, Bob Marley, Elton John, Whitney Houston, Little Richard, Cher, and many more.

The White Stripes'  26-song greatest hits album is due out on December 4 ... that we know - what we don't know is what songs will be on it - other than Ball and Biscuit.  

But now - some Stripes Super Fans have the chance to know what songs made the cut - but completing a The White Stripes Crossword Puzzle (click the image to expand)

But this ain't no kids stuff- the puzzle was written by Ben Blackwell, the band’s foremost historian, and has stumped some of the band's biggest fans and colleagues 

Blackwell explains:

“When the idea of a crossword puzzle for announcing the White Stripes Greatest Hits track list came up, I thought it’d be a fun challenge to see how many of the song titles I could wring clues out of WITHOUT using anything to do with the band or their version of the songs.  When TMR co-founder/co-owner (and someone DEEPLY involved in the tracklist selection) Ben Swank told me ‘I don’t know the answers to any of these,’ I felt like I had done a decent job"

 

So good luck ... and remember - you always do a crossword puzzle in pencil! 

One of our favorite stories from 2020 has to be the relationship between Dave Grohl and the 10 year old phenom Nandi Bushell. 

In a nutshell -we found videos of Nandi slaying it on the drums in the UK about a year ago ... and since then - she laid down a drum off challenge to Dave Grohl - to which he responded with a song dedicated to her (read more here) 

And now - thanks to the New York Times  the young drummer had an online meetup with her hero - which she called  “one of the best experiences” of her life. “Dave Grohl is so awesome, kind and friendly! I can’t believe he wants to write a song with me and asked me to perform onstage with the Foo Fighters!”

The song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel, has seen a lot of covers since 1945 ... most recently from Lana Del Rey ... and maybe most famously by the Liverpool FC fans who have adopted it as their team anthem ... 

But this week we got another inspired cover of the track that reminds us to “walk on, walk on ... With hope in your heart ... And you’ll never walk alone" by Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes.

The track is part of Johnnie Walker's Keep Walking campaign, which aims “to encourage you to be confident on your own path, and always remember that wherever you are on your journey, the most important step isn’t your last… it’s your next.”

A lot of people engaged in some completely warranted 'stress eating' during the election night coverage  ... we're not sure if Lana Del Rey was stress eating - but she was watching the poll results come in from a Denny's ... 

And this parking lot dining room seemed to be as good a place as any to give her fans some good news and bad news.  The bad news is that her new album - "Chemtrails Over the Country Club" which is done and she is very happy with it - has had its release date  pushed back 16-weeks - due to the shut down of vinyl production plants.  She says the album is beautiful, folksy, and very different than Norman Fucking Rockwell.  

The good news - in the meantime - she will be dropping a digital record of American standards and classics in time for Christmas.  Apparently it will include covers of Patsy Cline and Americana songs with Nikki Lane.

She also released an a cappella version of You'll Never Walk Alone - for a documentary about the English Premier League champions - Liverpool Football Club.  The song has served as the teams anthem for many years.

After an amazing 2019 - performing along side acts like Hozier, Dolly Parton, Brandi Carlile and Jason Isbell - Jade Bird has had a relatively quiet 2020 - but she's ready to get a jumpstart on 2021 - with the release of the song 'Headstart' (listen below) 

According to Bird, the song: 

“came out of a trip I made to upstate New York at the beginning of the year. Being there, I was immediately taken back to the magic and inspiration of creating the first album. 

 

It’s quite a light-hearted song, about liking someone who just can’t see the signs, but more than that releasing it feels like a way to give a bit of joy to the end of the year. It feels like community to me, and it makes me want to sing again.”

Hard to believe it has almost been two years since Jade Bird came to the RNR studios to perfrom Uh-huh (see the performance here)

Arcade Fire have been pretty active this campaign season and they capped off the political window as guests on the Stephen Colbert’s Election Night 2020: Democracy’s Last Stand: Building Back America Great Again Better 2020. 

The band performed a new song - which is presumably from the new album they claim to be working on - titled “Generation A” ... which is “inspired by the current climate of the country ... and a hopeful message to the youths.”

Earlier this year,  Dave Grohl revealed that a new Foo Fighters record had been completed.

“We just finished another fucking record... And I’m so fucking proud of it. It’s unlike anything we’ve ever done. I’m fucking excited for people to hear it, and I can’t wait to jump on that fucking stage to play it ... there are choruses on this record that 50-fucking-thousand people are gonna sing, and it’s gonna bring everyone’s fucking hearts together in that moment. And that’s what it’s all about.” 

Well ... the pandemic caused the band postpone the record's release - but  now it seems Dave and Co. are ready to drop that album on us! 

Some eagle eye fans have been noticing a cryptic billboard campaign going on in California ...

For those keeping score at home - Springsteen logged two top five albums in the 1970s (Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town), five in the 1980s (The River, Nebraska, Born in the U.S.A., Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band 1975-1985, and Tunnel of Love), three in the 1990s (Human Touch, Lucky Town, Greatest Hits), six in the ‘00s (Live in New York City, The Rising, Devils & Dust,  We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, Magic, and Working On a Dream), four in the ‘10s (Wrecking Ball, High Hopes, Chapter and Verse, and Western Stars) and one so far in the ‘20s (Letter to You).

Earlier this year- Bob Dylan became  the first artist to have a Billboard Top 40 album in each decade since the 1960s with the release of Rough and Rowdy Ways

Stardust - the biopic about the life of David Bowie wand his first trip to America back in 1971, is set to hit theaters and VOD on November 25.  

There's just one catch - there won't be any of David Bowie's music in the film.  

Duncan Jones, Bowie’s son, took to social media after the film's announcement that 'nobody has been granted music rights for ANY biopic… '

Im not saying this movie is not happening. I honestly wouldn't know.
Im saying that as it stands, this movie won't have any of dads music in it, & I can't imagine that changing. If you want to see a biopic without his music or the families blessing, thats up to the audience.

not sure if the music will make THAT much of a difference in a film that tells  the story of the record executive who believes in the young Bowie and his transformation into Ziggy Stardust:
