Big Red Machine's (aka Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner) New Album Will Feature Taylor Swift, Fleet Foxes, Sharon Van Etten, and More

How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? the follow up to the self titled debut by Big Red Machine's - aka Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Aaron Dresner of The National - is chock full of guest appearances.  Notably -  Taylor Swift (who worked with both Dessner and Vernon on her last two albums), Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, and Sharon Van Etten.

The band has released a video for “Latter Days” - the album's first single featuring Anaïs Mitchell.

In a statement, Dressner said:

“It was clear to Anaïs that the early sketch Justin and I made of ‘Latter Days’ was about childhood, or loss of innocence and nostalgia for a time before you’ve grown into adulthood—before you’ve hurt people or lost people and made mistakes...She defined the whole record when she sang that, as these same themes kept appearing again and again.”

How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? is out August 27 via Jagjaguwar/37d03d

Foo Fighters epic 3 hour NYC show included a cover of Radiohead's 'Creep' with surprise guest Dave Chappelle [VIDEO]

Foo Fighters helped the world take another step towards post Covid normalcy - playing a sold out show for fully vaccinated fans at New York City's famed arena - Madison Square Garden.

The epic 3 hour / 24 song show featured Dave Grohl drumming, the live debut of the Dee Gee's (the band's disco alter ego) and covers - including one with a special appearance by comedian Dave Chapelle on vocals:

Creep - Foo Fighters feat. Dave Chappelle  June 20, 2021

This wasn't Chapelle's first attempt at the song - having previously  covered the song previously, both with Ed Sheeran and at an SNL afterparty - an episode he hosted with Foo Fighters as musical guest

Despite the anti vaxers protesting  outside -  Dave was super excited for the show -

saying

"we've been waiting for this day for over a year. And Madison Square Garden is going to feel that hard. New York, get ready for a long ass night of screaming our heads off together to 26 years of Foos."

Here's hoping Dave has some more concert announcements coming and DC/MD/VA are included

Odelay At 25: Beck Reflects on How Oasis, Eminem, and Spike Jonze Influenced His Most Successful Album

25 years ago this week - Beck released his fifth album Odelay.  He thought the album would flop ... but with  singles like "Where It's At", "Devils Haircut", and "The New Pollution", it would go on to win him a Grammy and be his most successful albums to date.

Beck was a guest on  Matt Wilkinson’s Apple Radio show today to discuss the Odelay era.

He explained that he thought the album would tank:

I had very low expectations...I thought at the very best, it would come out. It would be a big flop, but in 20 years, a bunch of weirdos would find it and go, 'Oh, this record was cool,' because it wasn't the obvious commercial follow-up. There was a famous producer that came to my house who got an advanced copy and he took me for a drive and he said, 'You know, I got your album.' I was shocked. I was like, 'How did you get it? I haven't even given it to my friends yet.' He said, 'If you release it, it'll be a huge mistake. You should not release this record. You should go back in and make a real album with real songs.' I remember being so deflated and I went home very discouraged and scared because I was 24 and I had virtually no money and I had just spent about $300,000 making this record. I thought it would be paying it off, working in a minimum wage job for a decade. It was going to be a disaster. The whole thing was going to be a disaster."

He explained that Spike Jonze was the only one to take pictures during the session:

One day Spike Jones, who lived in the neighborhood, dropped by and he lived down the street with Sofia Coppola. He had just bought a ’60s Polaroid camera. And he came in, and then I was playing a sitar. I was cross legged playing a sitar. He came in and took some photos. And those are the only photos I’ve ever seen of us recording the record. No documentation at all.

Oasis helped him get his footing in England:

England was the one place I really just couldn’t gig. There was no love there at all for me. So I got this call from my A&R, from Mark Kates, he said, “I was just in London and I was hanging out with the Gallagher brothers and I gave them a copy of Odelay and they’re obsessed with it. And they want to do a remix.” I said, “Holy, shit.” (What’s The Story) Morning Glory had just come out. And it was huge. It was blowing up. So they wanted to go into the studio and do a remix of “Devil’s Haircut.” And I thought, “I didn’t even know they did remixes.”

I remember we were playing at a little theater — classic London, little theater. I come out on stage, completely jet lagged. I’m wearing a ’60s suit, a suit jacket and a tie. Definitely not grunge. And right in front of me, in the front row was Liam, and I couldn’t believe they were even there. And he was singing all the words. He knew all the words to “New Pollution” and “Devil’s Haircut.” So the first thing I thought of when you said, “What was surprising when people heard this record?” It was seeing Oasis right there at that in ’96, there in the front singing the words back. It was like, my mind was blown. They were so open, armed and embracing me and generous. And I’ve never received that from another musician. They were just kind of like, “You’re in the club. You’re one of our guys.” And that kind of acceptance was what you dream about when you’re first starting to make music.

Beck - Devils Haircut (Remix by Noel Gallagher)

And as for Eminem - it seems like he and Dr Dre used an iconic sample before he could:

I went in my first meeting with Jimmy Iovine and I had Midnite Vultures and I was going to play it for him. He said, “Before we do anything, I just signed this kid. It’s going to be massive. It’s going to change everything. We just got the video. They just sent it to us today. Sit down and watch this.” Me and my manager sat down and we’re looking at each other like, “Ah.” So he puts on the record and the video comes on and it’s like, “Hi, my name is.” And it’s this blonde kid rapping. And the song is funny. And then my jaw’s on the floor, because the loop, the sample is a Wurlitzer keyboard, just like on “Where It’s At.” It’s the sample that the Dust Brothers were saving for me to be the follow-up for “Where It’s At.” It’s the exact sample. “I Got The Blues.” Which we were saving for the follow-up to Midnite Vultures. And then Dr. Dre got to it first and he used it for Eminem’s first single.

'Get Back' - Peter Jackson's Beatles Documentary to Debut on Disney+ this November

It has been in the mix for a while - but we now know that The Beatles: Get Back, Peter Jackson's 6 hour documentary on the fab four will air this fall on Disney+.

The six hour doc will air in  three separate, two-hour episodes on Nov. 25, 26, 27, 2021.

The film comes more than 60 hours (!) of  footage that was shot  in January 1969, as the Beatles rehearsed and worked on new music in anticipation of their first live show in more than two years - which ended  up being their last live performance as a group, the rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row.

Peter Jackson is the only one who has been granted access to that footage in the last half century :0

The Beatles: Get Back - A Sneak Peek from Peter Jackson

Jackson said of the project-

“In many respects, Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s remarkable footage captured multiple storylines. The story of friends and of individuals. It is the story of human frailties and of a divine partnership. It is a detailed account of the creative process, with the crafting of iconic songs under pressure, set amid the social climate of early 1969. But it’s not nostalgia—it’s raw, honest, and human. Over six hours, you’ll get to know The Beatles with an intimacy that you never thought possible. I’m very grateful to The Beatles, Apple Corps and Disney for allowing me to present this story in exactly the way it should be told. I’ve been immersed in this project for nearly three years, and I’m very excited that audiences around the world will finally be able to see it.”

Needless to say - we can.not.wait

Watch this parrot's amazing cover of Led Zeppelin

Tico the Parrot and his bandmate Frank Maglio Jr. has been uploading their music videos for a while now - but their jazzy rendition of Led Zeppelin’s Stairway To Heaven is one of the best (or worst?) things on the internet right now ...

Tico doesn’t actually know the words to the song -  but we're not sure Robert Plant does either at this point ;)

Lorde Reveals 'Solar Power' First New Song 'Solar Power' Featuring Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo

In 2019 - Lorde announced that she paused working on the follow up to her 2017 album Melodrama due to the death of her dog Pearl.

“I need some time to see the good again, to finish making this for you”

This week - the New Zealand singer is unleashed a brand new single “Solar Power” from a forthcoming album with the same name.

Lorde wrote in her newsletter:

“The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors.  In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through...I want this album to be your summer companion, the one you pump on the drive to the beach. The one that lingers on your skin like a tan as the months get cooler again.”

Jack Antonoff co-wrote, co-produced, plays guitar and drums “Solar Power” with Lorde while Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo sing backup vocals on the song, too.

There is no release date for the album at this time but she did confirm she has more music and videos from the album ready to go

LOCKN

LOCKN’ Music Festival has pivoted away from its 3 day fest in October to a new format - the LOCKN’ Farm, three mini fests - the weekends of Aug. 13-15, Aug. 20-22 and Aug. 27-29 in Arrington, Va.

LOCKN’ Farm Promoter Peter Shapiro said via press release:

“LOCKN’, the music festival, has had an amazing run, with hundreds of thousands of fans witnessing countless epic performances and collaborations by hundreds of legendary artists.  Given the realities of COVID-19 and the world we now live in, it feels like the right moment to do something new and a bit more intimate, while keeping the best of what the four-day festival has offered since 2013. This August, LOCKN’ will become a weekly destination — LOCKN’ Farm — a place with a history of good vibes and magic, and instead of hosting a single annual festival we will sprinkle the LOCKN’ spirit across multiple music and camping weekends. Positive things often emerge out of challenging times, and LOCKN’s evolution from a single-weekend festival to a place where bands can host their own special events is going to be one of them.”

Watch Former Pearl Jam Drummer Dave Abbruzzese Rerecords

"Sometimes you just have to say yes."

And that's just what former Pearl Jam Drummer Dave Abbruzzese did when agreeing to a virtual cover of the band's song "Rearviewmirror".

Dave and various members of the popular Facebook group Pearl Jam France got together  which originally appeared on Pearl Jam's second studio album, 1993's "Vs."

According to the group who made the final project:

There are 66 participants visible in this video and 69 people if you count those who cannot be seen. It took two months to set up the project from start to finish. From March 30 to June 1, 2021. That is to say 63 days exactly.

Abbruzzese joined Pearl Jam  in 1991 and played on the band's first  three albums "Ten"  "Vs." and Vitalogy ....   but exited the group prior to the latter album's release

Watch Courtney Love play

In 2020 - Courtney Love was supposed to get her band Hole back together.  Instead - she spent the year in a life threatening battle with anemia.  At one point - the grunge goddess weighed 97 pounds.

We are happy to report that her health has improved and part of her rehab has included some musical therapy.  The work has gone so well - she has decided to publish some of the  low-key jam sessions alongside her friend and Big Moon musician Juliette Jackson. The project - titled Bruises of Love - will be a video series in which she covers her favorite songs with Jackson by her side.

The first installment is an acoustic cover of “California Stars”, the folk-rock staple from Wilco and Billy Bragg’s joint 1998 album Mermaid Avenue featuring lyrics by the late Woody Guthrie.

Future covers will include songs by Simon and Garfunkel and Elliott Smith.  Hole told Vogue :

“I just really love these songs and they’re all either tied to memories I have or just examples of great craftsmanship — or a wink at someone or whatever ... First off, my guitar playing is terrible. I used to be okay enough to write songs and play onstage, but for a while I just couldn’t. I was really, really sick during lockdown and trying to use the pain to find solace in my guitar, but I just wasn’t connected with my artistry. It was gone. I read an article about how Laura Marling was giving guitar lessons online and off to the side I saw this girl Juliette [Jackson] from Big Moon was doing the same thing. I wrote to her and made her sign an NDA since everyone on my team is so paranoid and we had three sessions together where we’d just hang out and sing ‘Boots of Spanish Leather’ while playing together.”

As for a rescheduled Hole reunion - don't hold your breath - she was pretty blunt on that not happening -

"you guys have gotta get over it. Our old manager Peter Mensch calls once a year to ask about a reunion: ‘Hey, just doing my thing I do every year with you and Jimmy Page [of Led Zeppelin].’ And I’m so honored to be in that company, but it’s just not gonna happen.”
